Kids love Halloween. That’s probably more likely from the candy rather than the costumes or spirit of the thing, but that’s kids for you. In any case, Halloween is a time for putting on costumes, particularly those of a scary sort.
Enter the kids vampire costume and the kids witch costume. These two are perhaps the two most classic of Halloween costumes. For boys, the vampire costume a la Dracula (played by the incomparable Bela Lugosi). For girls, it’s the witch costume. It’s been that way for a long time.
The vampire costume is often based on the depiction described in Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula. Set in Victorian England and Continental Europe of the time, its characters were garbed in standard Victorian attire. In fact, what Count Dracula wore – shirt, pants, cape or cloak – would have been normal attire for men, if not for one exception. Dracula wore his collar erect and long. Today, this style has become called the “vampire collar”, and appears on many vampire costumes.
Witch costumes on the other hand feature lots of variations in style, color, and general feel. The only real constant is the hat, which must be long and conical with a wide brim. It doesn’t have to be straight or super stiff, but it will still be recognized as a “witch’s hat”. From there, it’s a circus of cuts, styles, and colors. There’s the old standard – black and long. A newer style features shorter skirts and colors like purple and blue. There’s even one colored like candy corn!
